For many folks the ultimate mountain experience is found in a rocker on the porch, soaking in the peace and quiet of the woods or gazing out at seemingly endless views of the peaks surrounding their home. However, the outdoors holds a wide variety of wonderful experiences just waiting for the visitor or resident. The choices range from leisurely fly fishing to hiking seriously rugged trails up steep mountainsides.
Water Sports: The abundance of lakes and rivers in the tri-state area provide a great choice of water activities from boating, swimming, tubing to white-water rafting.
Fishing: Again, the lakes and rivers offer superb choices–fly fishing in a rushing trout stream to bass fishing on the lake.
Golf: Golfing can be a unique experience in the mountains with tough terrain. Five courses are found in the local area: In North Carolina are Cherokee Hills Golf and Country Club, Chatuge Shores Golf Course, and The Ridges. In Georgia, Blairsville is home to Butternut Creek Golf Course and Brasstown Valley Resort is found in Young Harris. Six more courses are available within two hours’ drive or less.
Hunting: If hunting is your sport, there is ample opportunity to hunt black bear, wild boar, deer, turkey and other small game. The Nantahala and Cherokee National Forests offer thousands of acres of prime hunting territory.
Horseback Riding: Many properties include pasture land and barns for you to keep your own horses. If just an occasional ride is more your style, local stables offer choices ranging from one hour trail rides to overnight trips into the mountains.
Off-the-Roading: Several off-highway vehicle areas provide easy to extremely challenging trails for 4-wheel vehicles ranging from near-stock Jeeps, SUVs to all-terrain four-wheelers.
Motorcycle Touring: Motorcycle enthusiasts will find the 11-mile stretch of U.S. 129 known as “The Dragon” to be one the world’s best motorcycling roads. Featuring 318 curves, it starts in North Carolina and ends in Tennessee.
Hiking and Biking: The tri-state area boasts some of the best hiking and biking paths in the Southeast—including one of the most famous, the Appalachian Trail. Choose from short easy trails to extremely challenging long hikes. Hiking clubs abound, as well as guided hikes.
Times of Quiet Reflection: While there are active outdoor activities for all ages, one of the most appealing aspects of mountain life is the beauty and serenity that surround you. A quiet picnic in the woods, a stroll along a tree covered path or gazing out at the view from your own special spot–opportunities for rest and renewal are all around you.
